Austin Eòin Buchanan was born in Linlithgow, Scotland, and is the youngest of three blond-haired, blue-eyed sons following older brothers, Logan and Rory. Their parents, Allister and Annabelle, a cop and a midwife, first welcomed Logan and fourteen months later their second son, Rory, arrived. They completed their family with Austin, another eighteen months following Rory, and the boys grew up very close in their tight-knit family together.
They were pretty content most of their lives, close but with very different personalities. Logan was detail-oriented, naturally smart guy who liked to know how things worked and had a sharp mind for tactical planning. Rory was the softer of the three, a born artist who had ambition to write kids books and become a nurse. Austin was the more traditional, always having an ambition to join the military, the Royal British Army to be exact, and he wanted to become a paratrooper. Which is exactly what he did, and eventually made it to Special Forces as a Sergeant 1 PARA, being stationed with the First Battalion, Parachute Regiment, Sixteen Air Assault Brigade where he would come to be deployed to Afghanistan for two terms of service.
However, things for the Buchanan family took a bad turn when, after just over a year of being happily married to his high school sweetheart, new dad, Rory, tragically lost his wife and baby daughter in circumstances unknown. They went missing on a walk by Linlithgow Loch one day to feed the ducks and to this day, 10 years down the track, it is still a mystery what happened to them, though Rory has his suspicions. The experience more than hardened kind-hearted Rory and the way he dealt with his grief was by pushing his family away to the point of becoming estranged from them. They all tried to help, but it just pushed him further and further away. It didn't help when Logan decided to move to London to join the police force and soon being ear-marked for MI6, making it difficult for him to continue attempts at getting through to his grieving brother. Soon after was when Austin enlisted which also took him away from the family's Scottish home when he moved to the Army base in England for training.
With his focus on his job, Austin missed a massive part of connecting with his brothers in the wake of the tragedy. He was only drawn back into the mix when news came to him that his oldest brother, Logan, had a brain tumour and had only been given three months to live. Austin applied for special leave from service so he could spend his brother's last days with him and their family. What he had no knowledge of was the fact that Logan, for years, had been romantically involved with a Kindred vampire from Ventrue bloodline and was now entertaining the idea of being Embraced to save his life... albeit to be replaced with a cursed one. Austin was also oblivious to the fact Rory had been drawn into the Kindred world of The Masquerade. As a hunter of supernatural forces of evil, Rory had dug so deep to discovered it may have been a rebel group of Kindred of the Clan Brujah, who had a reputation for fighting power to gain their own, that killed his wife and daughter. It took Rory's search to France, and that was where he was attacked by a gang of nasty Brujah who got wind of his search, and they left him for dead. Kindred Prince of Paris, Blaise Richelieu, a very old Kindred, intercepted and hearing what happened to his brother, Logan went to France to liaise with the Prince and insist the Kindred responsible be given the maximum punishment. It was shortly after this, Logan fell ill with terrible and uncontrollable headaches, and when his lover realised he couldn't feed from him because his blood was tainted, Logan learned he was dying and was given three months to live.
He lasted just under three weeks before he succumbed to it. Since knowing of his lover, Logan had been contemplating being Embraced, however he only wanted to be Embraced into a Scottish bloodline. Calling in a favour from dear friend, and fellow Prince of the City of Scotland, Ealasaid Loudain, Blaise requested she Embrace Logan should he wish it. Logan was losing a lot of mental capacity rapidly from the tumour, so he put his request to be Embraced in writing at the last minute and forwarded it to Ealasaid. The disclaimer at the bottom was that if he was incapable of making the decision himself before his time came, she could make it for him. Austin met his brothers at Edinburgh Airport in Scotland when they arrived home from France to go to Ealasaid's estate and the Kindred HQ. He had felt physically ill seeing how sick Logan was, but the only time he had left to spend with his brother was ride from the airport to the estate. Logan passed away on the front steps of the manor, and it was only with Rory giving him CPR to hold out the last moments of breath and heartbeat within him that Ealasaid, seeing the distress in Logan's younger brothers, Embraced him on the spot.
Austin didn't cope well. He broke down in shock not only watching his brother die, but also watching him be Embraced... when he had no knowledge of Kindred or the fact there was such a thing as the supernatural beyond story and fantasy. He was taught about it, but he didn't absorb it or cope well. He felt liked he had been robbed of having longer time at the end of Logan's life, and even though Logan re-awakened and Austin met with him after his Embrace, he was too different, not just in personality, but also looks, for Austin to deal with it. In fact, he dealt very bad with it and ended up in a horrific argument with both brothers three weeks after Logan's Embrace. He stormed out, got on the next plane back to the Army base and requested to be stationed back in Afghanistan immediately. He was in complete denial, but he didn't know any other way to face it.
From there on, he only stayed in touch with Rory but refused to talk of Logan. He climbed the ranks to Sergeant and is now finished his second term of service in Afghanistan and returned to England. After a lot of soul searching, Austin had chosen to travel to New York to see his brothers - both of them - and see how he can handle that his big brother is now Kindred, and carries a secret of his own. Austin is very straight-laced, by the book, and respectful of hierarchy. He can come off as dry and very sarcastic, possibly even a buzzkill, but it is only a result of what he has been through and how he has been trained. He isn't sure how he will go away from the structured military life, but he feels he needs a time out... he just has no idea where it will take him.
Like his brothers, and many generations of their family before them, Austin is fiercely patriotic. Like both his brothers, he was taught how to play the bagpipes from a young age by their father, a Pipe Major in their local pipe band and when he was 13, he played with their band at the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo. They all own kilts in the family Buchanan tartan and Austin has a tattoo with Alba Gu Bràth, "Scotland Forever" in Scottish Gaelic on one upper arm, on his other upper arm, the Buchanan Clan crest, Scotland the Brave in the middle of his upper back, and finally a 'Made in Scotland' tattoo on his left butt cheek, a present from his big brothers when he was drunk as a skunk on his 21st birthday.
Within a vampire bloodline known as The Kindred, seven vampire clans are collectively joined, forming the largest sect of vampires called the Camarilla, and survive through the Masquerade, disguising themselves as humans. Camarilla policy is that vampires should try to fit in with and hide from the rest of humanity, as to easily feed on them. For this reason, they created a web of lies and misinformation, called the Masquerade, to make the public believe that supernatural beings like vampires could not possibly exist. The Camarilla also believes that the only way the vampire species can survive in these modern nights is if it unite. Any breach of the Masquerade by any vampire risks exposing the entire race. Both viewpoints are fundamentally opposed by the Sabbat, an opposing sect to the Camarilla. The Camarilla also enforces the Eldest as ruling class over the younger vampires. The seven clans of the Camarilla are Ventrue, Brujah, Malkavian, Toreador, Gangrel, Tremere and Nosferatu. When a human is turned by a Kindred vampire, it is known as the Embrace, the vampire siring the human to embrace them into their own bloodline.
Each city has a ruler, a "Prince" who enforces the laws of The Masquerade that govern them to protect their anonymity. A clan is a group of vampires "related" by blood; i.e. the vampiric equivalent of an extended family or lineage. A clan is usually a large group, acknowledged widely in the vampiric society. Each clan nurture their own characteristics and traits, and each clan has its strengths and weaknesses. Often the clans do not always get along with certain clans such as the Brujah and the Ventrue actually hating one another. Each clan within a given area has a representative, a Primogen, who is usually the eldest and most powerful member of the clan, who attends the leader or prince's advisory council. This status also grants the character social advantages and greater power than being a normal member of their clan.
